I used to have tomatoes and chillies in my balcony in the winter, I had kept them in a stand to get the maximum sunlight. Though the chillies thrived, tomatoes could not fruit much. All these plants were fighting for the sunlight. So this time, I thought I would make a plan to utilise the sunlight and space available.
How to plan a garden in balcony:
1. List down the plants you want
- A balcony garden is an opportunity to be creative and to construct a space that adds value to your life. Whether you’re looking to grow some of your own food, have a nice place to relax, dine outside or take in the view, a balcony can make this dream a reality.

There are vegetables, flowering plants, ornamental plants, herbs and even trees that could be grown in containers in a limited space. Make a list of all the plants you require in your garden. Easy to grow ones are the spinach, mint, fenugreek, coriander, tomatoes, chillies, etc. Most of them can be easily started with seeds and the seeds are already available in your kitchen.
Use shoe racks, book shelves, and plant holders to keep more pots. If you’re a balcony gardener, railing planters and hanging planters are a must. Besides, there are many other unique vertical gardening ideas available here. Also Read: DIY Vertical Garden Ideas. Start with the Productive and Easiest Container Vegetables.
2. Identify which plants require the sunlight and which require shade
All the flowering plants require very good sunlight and the vegetables too. But herbs like mint, coriander could do well in partial shade. I have grown even chillies in partial shade.
3. Observe the sunlight in your balcony
Observe the amount of sunlight falling in your place and at what season and draw a pattern in a piece of paper. In worst case, a kitchen garden could survive in shade, but the produce may be low or they could take time to harvest. No worries if your balcony has less light. There are plants for every one.
4. Design the position of plants and herbs
Make note of the foliage of plants and herbs and place them in an appropriate position in the sunlight pattern you made on a paper. A kitchen garden could be ornamental too. The leaves of Methi, potato coriander, spinach provide a lush green color with different pattern of leaves. There are leafy vegetables which could add red color to your space.
This is the plan I made for my balcony.
There is a triangle of sunlight available in the balcony, in the morning on one side and in the noon on the other side. This is shown in the picture as yellow color. The area marked B is where sunlight is available most of the day.
Among us game on mac download. The plants arrangement are going to be in the same triangle too. With plants that require more sunlight occupying the front row facing the balcony wall and the plants that thrive in shade in the smaller edge of triangle. Also, I would have to sacrifice some precious space in area B, so that we can enjoy the garden or the view outside when we stand in the balcony. The area marked as A are outside the balcony where I am going to place pot holders for flowers or some herbs again.

I have just started with Methi and I could make more additions as and when I could find time. The completed arrangement would take a lot of time and I will take photos for each addition to post them later.
We’ve already told you about smart balcony storage ideas but what design to choose in case you don’t have much space there? I think that greenery in a balcony leaves an impression of being in the garden, so placing planters with herbs, flowers and succulents is a cool idea – put them on the floor and walls. The main thing is a seat, and here everything depends on the size of the balcony. If it’s tine – then a big floor pillow is enough but if you have more space, then little chairs and a table that can be hung on the rail is the best choice, and romantic dinners outdoors will be waiting for you! Maybe you can put a love seat or a small sofa with a blanket to read books in comfort. Hanging lights or candle lanterns – it’s up to you, to the style you like and to the atmosphere that you want to create. Look for some inspiration below!
