Nov 01, 2020 I just got a refurbished 60D (yeah!) and was looking for a way to check the shutter count. I haven't been able to find a straight answer online anywhere, and the popular EOSinfo doesn't work either (it shows the shutter count at 0). Using numeric suffix of filenames written by the camera on a flash card is not equivalent to camera's shutter count (the suffix resets to 0 after 9999). Here are examples when the filename does not indicate the true number of pictures taken with the camera.
  • A new flash card is inserted containing a picture file with higher numerical suffix. The numbering then continues with this higher suffix. For example, if the last file written by the camera was IMG_3750.JPG, this indicates that the shutter count is 3750. If a new flash card is inserted with a file IMG_4100.JPG, then the next picture taken with the camera will be written under IMG_4101.JPG. The shutter count in this case will be only 3751.
  • If a blank flash card is inserted afterwards, some cameras like the Canon 60D will continue previous filename numbering; for example, will write file IMG_4102.JPG when shutter count is 3752.The file name is edited to lower the numerical suffix. Some cameras, such as the Canon 5D Mark II, will use the card filename to construct the name for the next picture. This results in a much lower perceived shutter count than the true shutter count. For example, let's say the filename is edited from IMG_9000.JPG to IMG_2000.JPG. The next picture file written by a camera like Canon 5D Mark II will be IMG_2001.JPG. The perceived shutter count is 2001, whereas the real shutter count is 9001.
  • Pictures are taken when the camera is connected directly to a computer (without a flash card inside).

Hello all,
Yes, I did a search but could not find a method or software tool to find out the exact shutter count on my 6D.
Does anyone know how to do this, and what software tool might work?

There are 3rd party tools to do that. However since I have magic lantern installed on mine, that gives me the shutter count.

Tom,
Do you have a link to that service? I am not finding anything that has that name and is a paid service.
I did find several tools where you upload a photo but they come up blank, not working on 6D.

Here's a FREE one. I've tested it with my 6D.

Doesn't work with my 6D. Nothing works with my 80D.

Are you on a Mac? I can only speak for the Windows program.
The steps on Windows are:
- download the folder from his Google Drive, you'll get a .zip file containing 4 files
- unzip and run the .exe file
- a small program window appears with empty info boxes
- plug the USB cable into the camera and turn the camera on (or half-press the shutter button if it was on sleep)
- the info appears in those info boxes

Win7. Program runs. Does nothing.

Tested with 3 6D cameras and worked every time.

I checked my 6D shutter count last week. Some of the free downloads seemed a bit dodgy to me. One of them wanted to install some custom USB drivers on my PC... I ditched that one. I finally settled on a Astro Photo app and that worked. I downloaded the demo version and eventually found my shutter count.. it wasn't that intuitive but I got there in the end. https://www.ideiki.com/astro/Download.aspx
